Types of Stone Tile

Marble

Marble has a classic and timeless beauty, however, since it is softer and more porous than granite, marble can scratch, stain, and etch. If you love the look, don't be afraid to go with marble. Just think, marble has been used for centuries in architecture around the world. It ages gracefully and gains more character over time. To help slow down the aging process, make sure to keep this stone sealed and wipe up any spills immediately!

Granite

Granite tiles are natural stone tiles made from granite rocks, which is one of the hardest materials on earth. They come in unique colors and design options. Granite tiles are fast becoming a favorite in many homes and offices because of its classic appeal, versatility and durability. Granite tile is great for kitchen worktops and as floor and wall tiles. Like a fingerprint, no two granite slabs will be the same.

Slate

Slate is a natural stone material that is quarried from out of the earth, usually from mountains. It's a durable stone that comes in a wide range of colors, depending on the location and minerals of the slate in question. It is often black, dark green, and gray, but can also include instances of red, purple, gold, and blue. Slate tiles are used not only for flooring, but also wall tiling, back splashes, stepping stones, roofing, and a variety of other uses.

Travertine

Made from minerals deposited in springs, Travertine is a stone with neutral tones along with various textures that compliment any space. Travertine is a softer stone that is suitable for flooring, backsplashes, bathrooms, or fireplaces. Travertine products that include more textures are also appropriate for outdoor usage.

Limestone

Limestone has been quarried for centuries and is popular in architecture in many landmarks internationally. Limestone has been commonly used for flooring, backsplashes, bathrooms, or fireplaces. Avoid using limestone products on countertops as it a softer stone and acid sensitive.

Care and Maintenance of Natural Stone Tile

Natural stone tiles require cleaners that are made specifically for them, since chemicals in traditional cleaners can damage them.

  • Marble Tile: Mop or wipe the surface with a pH neutral stone specific solution using a clean sponge, cloth or mop. Use only a neutral, non-abrasive and non-acidic cleaner. Do not use vinegar or any cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, acids or strong alkalis. Stones with a polished finish are especially sensitive to harsh chemicals. It is important that the cleaner is a non-oil, non-wax, non-soap and non-animal fat based product. These products act like a magnet, attracting dirt and dust.

  • Travertine/Limestone/Slate Tile: You can use a non-acidic mild detergent. If your slate tile is coated, you can avoid water spots by drying the tile with a soft towel right after cleaning.

  • Granite Tile: Similar to slate and marble, granite tile should be cleaned with a mild detergent that is pH-neutral. Harsh cleaners can cause discoloration on the tile. Polished granite floors should be buffed to keep them looking shiny.
